The Affordable Care Act as of 2013 requires health plans to fully cover prenatal and postnatal professional breastfeeding support and supplies without co-payments, deductibles, or co-insurance, for the duration of breastfeeding.
Coverage for professional breastfeeding support and supplies has been limited.
If a family you have worked with is having difficulty getting reimbursement for lactation services, it may be helpful for them to use the appeal letter template below to send to their insurance plan’s Administrator and/or their employee benefits manager.
If all communication with the insurance company has been pursued without resolution, the family can consider filing a complaint with the Ohio Department of Insurance consumer protection agency.
